What’s the difference between net metering and behind the meter?

Ontario’s net metering program allows a hydro customer to connect their solar system to the grid and receive credits for the electricity they produce beyond what they consume in a given month. Customers with certain load profiles or with the addition of a battery, can accommodate all of the solar production without having to send any back to the grid, avoiding the added time and cost of a net metering system – this is called a Behind the Meter solution. What portion of my bill can be offset with solar or batteries?

Every electricity consumer in Ontario pays both a fixed and a variable rate on their electricity bill. Fixed charges are mostly comprised of delivery charges which account for the infrastructure required to delivery electricity to your facility. Variable rates are charged on a per kWh basis, either in the form of a Global Adjustment charge or a commodity charge. Variable charges can be reduced or eliminated with a net metering or behind-the-meter solar system, while fixed charges cannot. Typically, variable charges make up large majority of your electricity bill. We will factor your rate type and level of consumption to determine the exact portion of your bill that can be reduced giving you peace of mind for years to come.
